A leading composer of church music, Richard was Chamberlain of York Minster and a member of Chapter. As Director of Development, Richard helped raise £30 million to restore the Great East Window: a contribution celebrated, unusually, by a gargoyle on the East face of the Minster which some have called flattering. Richard was Head of the Minster School from 1985-2004, a governor of five schools, and chaired the Archbishop’s Youth Trust; the York Glaziers Trust; the Ryedale Festival; the Choir Schools Association and the Leeds Piano Competition. A Visiting Professor at the University of the South, Sewanee, and Visiting Fellow of York University, Richard is an honorary Freeman of the City of York and holds a Lambeth doctorate and two honorary doctorates. He read music at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge and was Head of Music at two Salisbury schools.
