The Vice Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire
The Vice Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire is Major Peter Scrope DL. The Lord-Lieutenant may appoint a Vice Lord-Lieutenant and the nomination is submitted to the Prime Minister in order that the approval of The Monarch may be obtained. The Vice Lord-Lieutenant stands-in when the Lord-Lieutenant cannot be present, is sick or otherwise unable to act, and carries out such duties as the Lord-Lieutenant decides. The appointment as Vice Lord-Lieutenant normally ends when the Lord-Lieutenant who made the appointment leaves his or her post. By statute, Vice Lord-Lieutenants retire at the age of 75.
Major Peter Scrope DL
Peter Scrope was appointed Vice Lord-Lieutenant for North Yorkshire in January 2015.
He was educated in North Yorkshire. After Sandhurst he completed an in-service degree in Politics & History at Essex University and served for 11 years in the 13th/18th Royal Hussars. He was Regimental Signals Officer, Adjutant and Squadron Leader.
On leaving the Army in 1984, Peter gained a place at INSEAD Business School but got diverted into starting a telecoms business. He was Managing Director of Millicom UK for 10 years and during this time moved the Company’s main office from London to Darlington. There are now more than 2,000 people employed at this site which is now part of EE; the company is Darlington’s largest private employer.
Following the sale of Millicom UK, Peter founded and was Managing Director of Multinational Automated Clearing House (MACH) SA, a clearing and settlement business for the mobile operators. By the time of its sale, MACH was handling 7bn transactions, over half of all the international roaming telephone calls made worldwide.
Peter has continued his involvement with the telecoms industry and is a director of OnePhone AB, who have a joint venture with British Telecom in the UK called BT OnePhone. He also has directorships with a number of other telecoms related start-ups in the UK and Europe.
Peter is involved with a number of local charities and trusts. He is married to Penny, a local Magistrate and they have 5 children aged between 21 and 30, one of whom is serving in the Light Dragoons, the successor Regiment to the 13th/18th Royal Hussars.
